The material you are looking at is from the book The Heart of Meditation, which belongs to the corpus of ‘Living the Awakened Heart’ training – an authentic, flexible study course in Buddhist meditation, reflection and insight.
The materials produced by the Awakened Heart Sangha, based on teachings by Lama Shenpen Hookham, who has over 50 years of experience in meditation instruction, and who is part of an important lineage of teachers in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.
We publish these materials with the wish to benefit anyone seeking a valid path to Awakening but websites and books alone cannot provide this.
Receiving the full benefit from the teachings requires formal transmission and direct one to one involvement with qualified teachers and spiritual friends, the living flame of inspiration passing from one person to another.
This involvement allows you to check your understanding and make sure you are on the right track. It supports your progress and helps you to go deeper. More importantly, working closely with others helps you avoid the many sidetracks and dangers of the spiritual path. Spiritual growth through meditation is not a solitary matter, but is intrinsically bound up with connections and unfolds best in a collective context.
The following short video is of Lama Shenpen explaining the importance of having a trained mentor or teacher in order to learn how to meditate, and the importance of Transmission and Lineage:
We hope that this website will encourage readers to explore the teachings more thoroughly within the framework of the Awakened Heart Sangha and the teachings of Lama Shenpen Hookham.
Students of Lama Shenpen have access to all the training materials covering the core themes that point you directly to the heart of the Buddha’s teachings on meditation, reflection and insight, focussing on your own direct experience.
The training is unique and designed especially to be accessible to westerners, whatever your background or experience of meditation. There is a regular cycle of online courses to participate in, and also extensive archive of audio and video recordings, as well as retreats and teaching events in person at The Hermitage, Lama Shenpen’s home and the Buddhist retreat centre in North Wales. Most events are also broadcast live online too, making them accessible wherever you are in the world.
